Overview of Care of the Cord

This course covers the correct procedure for cleaning, inspecting, and monitoring the umbilical cord stump of a newborn from birth until complete healing. Students will learn how to inspect the cord for signs of infection, how to clean the cord correctly using methylated spirit, how to check and maintain the cord clamp, and how to teach the mother to continue cord care at home. Proper cord care is essential in preventing neonatal infection.
